The NELSON project aims to increase maritime safety, efficiency, and environmental friendliness through next-generation innovative solutions. Advian provides deep expertise in combining computer vision with real-time, GNSS-independent location data.
The three-year NELSON project develops the physical and digital infrastructure of maritime fairways in two ways: by creating new innovative maritime services and by supporting the implementation of remote piloting. These solutions help improve the flow of vessel traffic information between authorities and port operators.
A significant project at the EU Level: modernizing TEN-T core network infrastructure requires top-tier expertise
Developing the physical and digital infrastructure of maritime fairways increases port safety and efficiency while enabling a reduction in negative environmental impacts.
In practice, the NELSON project develops entirely new types of software for maritime conditions, researches the feasibility of new technologies, and invests in maritime fairway infrastructure. The services developed will be tested in operational use. While remote piloting is used as a pilot in the project, the solutions will serve all commercial shipping vessels.
Real-time vessel positioning and situational awareness without satellite dependency
“Advian brings international-level deep expertise in computer vision, location data, and artificial intelligence to the project. Our solution enables real-time situational data analysis for ships as well as GNSS-independent positioning. It is great to apply our expertise to a new field once again,” comments Janne Honkonen, CEO of Advian.

Maritime safety from the Nordics to Las Palmas
Fintraffic Vessel Traffic Services acts as the project coordinator. In addition to Fintraffic and Advian, the project involves the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Aalto University, Finnpilot Pilotage Ltd, as well as various Finnish and Spanish companies and port authorities.
